Product Design

Localbuys

Localbuys is based in Prince Edward Island, Canada, with over 500 users using its service daily during the pandemic. The company engaged vendors, drivers and customers to bring different services in two apps - contacts, delivery service for local shops selling Canadian and international products in a delivery service. I was hired as a Product Designer to create services for local businesses and their community.

Challenges and Goals

  • How might we create a digestible and efficient online delivery experience for our Prince Edward Island customers, that averages 44 years of age, to make the app experience more engaging and easy to use?

  • Given that 33% of our users are older than 65, will digital interactive products enhance online shopping more efficiently for seniors (65 or older) than traditional in-person shopping?

  • How to encourage customers to look into each vendor's products, that visually align products in the most user-friendly yet aesthetic way

Users Interviews & Analysis

To know the locals.

I interviewed 50 users to learn about the following:

  • When, why, how often and how do they order products online.

  • How do they make their decision in choosing one delivery service over another.

  • Areas they think our competitors (Skipthedishes, Doordash) can improve on.

  • The user flow when they order products in the Localbuys app.

  • How they discover new stores, shops and products.

  • Any food allergies and other bad experiences influence their user flow.

  • Their experience using a kind of online delivery services.

From the user interviews, I came out with the following analysis:

  • Order products online in bad weather, busy schedules, with high conveniency required.

  • High price sensitivity and are most concerned about delivery fees.

  • Visually driven (want photos and brief descriptions of the products).

  • High interest in supporting local businesses and stores.

  • Want more accurate order status updates.

User Persona

Designed for the locals.

Problem Statement

Show users introduction engagement.

No introduction engagement was shown on the launch screen of the delivery app. Through extensive user research from the customers and vendors, there is a vital barrier between the users using the delivery service app by not acknowledging its purpose and usability.

Show the main components as introduction.

Present stores, delivery, items and location introduction as they are the main component of the delivery service app.

Solution

The Solution

Challenge

Create a world class design with a low budget.

That equals the competition and attracts new users, investors, vendors and cooperation partners.

Facing the Challenge

All in one place.

Localbuys combines the home page, location, shop choices into a seamless experience so you can easily see all the information you need in one place.

Glance and go.

When chosen the ideal shop to browse, you are one click away from checking out with your product in mind.

The other way around.

When you don't know any of the shops and just want to find the ideal product asap, you can simply browse your product in mind through the shop categories.

Tons of choices.

It all start with a category in mind with tons of choices provided in Localbuys.

Shopping made simpler and easier

By optimizing the small details in the delivery service app, I was able to help customers buy the desired product with high convenience, introduce the specific vendor's marketing language, and develop a complete interpretation of a particular product.
