I worked with Sumikko Mart, a local Japanese grocery store based in Charlottetown, to create their website to engage with Canadian customers and provide an online platform to buy Japanese products delivered by their doors during the pandemic.

As a contracted website designer, I applied principles from UX and UI design to the layout and structure of the website. I created high-fidelity wireframes and prototypes for the website's format in preparation. As well as user research surrounding the big topic of how customers would like the website to provide specific service.

Website Home Page: Hot Product Promotion

Problem: The owner of Sumikko Mart informed me that specific products are needed to be promoted throughout the season. For instance, the Pokka Coffee Jelly is the top-selling product in Sumikko Mart during the 2020 Summer season, and I have to promote the product during the pandemic when there are no in-person customers in the shop.

Process: As requested for the specific product - Pokka Coffee Jelly, I have to organize a point-and-shoot set-up with an underexposure background that matches the brown theme of the Pokka Coffee Jelly. After shooting the series of photos, I picked the one that aligns with the value in the first three stages in Emphasize, Define and Ideate of Design Thinking, then converted the prototype of the promotion cover photo on the website and tested the accessibility of the cover photo in the home page.

Building the Clickstream with affordance
and interaction design 👨‍💻✨

By scrolling down to the home page, I have chosen a more modern approach to designing the main horizontal menu of the website. I listed the main categories of products needed in the menu and then illustrated iconic products that can represent the category. Simultaneously, the seven categories are shown in a bar format with two arrowhead symbols that can click and find the desired category.

The bottom of the main horizontal menu promotes the three featured collections of Stay Home Club, Japanese Beverage, and Onigiri. With a short description and a background photo illustrating the collection, the "Shop Now" button directly afford to trigger an action of bringing the customer to the specific collection page.
